Lang Leve Rembrandt
(Long Live Rembrandt)
Exhibition
2019
The Self-portrait by Rembrandt van Rijn is an iconic artwork
renowned for its intricate details and use of light and shadow. In homage to
this masterpiece, a new technique was combined with an old one to create a
unique interpretation of the painting.
Using a cutout template, the self-portrait was etched onto a printing plate, allowing the image to emerge when printed. The template was created from four different levels of darkness, taken directly from the original painting, resulting in a recognizable yet unique version of the artwork.
This innovative technique was showcased at the Lang Leve Rembrandt exhibition at the Rijksmuseum from July to September 2019. Out of over 8,400 submissions from 95 countries, only 575 artworks were chosen to be exhibited, making this a significant accomplishment.
The Self-portrait by Rembrandt van Rijn is a testament to the beauty and complexity of art. By combining old and new techniques, this unique artwork bridges the gap between history and modern innovation, creating a truly remarkable piece that captures the essence of the original masterpiece.
